5 Advantages of Choosing a Dedicated Server Hosting

A company looking for more control may choose to go with a dedicated server provider. Under dedicated hosting, a single website is hosted on one machine.

Shared hosting still has a place on the world wide web. But for many reasons, companies have been moving to dedicated server platforms.

Here are some of the advantages:

1. Exclusivity

Nearly every other advantage is derived from exclusivity, so we ranked it as #1 on this list. With dedicated resources, your website will have the entire resources of a server allocated for exclusive use by your applications.

Since you will not be required to share web resources with other businesses, you won’t have to worry about another site’s script using up all of the available CPU or hogging all the ram, sending your site to cold storage. With the resources of your web server devoted exclusively to your applications, you will be able to gain direct access to the hardware if required. You will be free to administer every aspect of how your server operates.

2. Enhanced Security

Security is improved compared to shared hosting. Under the shared hosting model, if other websites on the server are hacked, the hackers might gain easy access to your website. With dedicated hosting, your website will not be as vulnerable to security holes in other websites.

Newly discovered security flaws like Meltdown and Spectre are not as likely to affect your website. Dedicated hosting can comply with PCI DSS standards, which will let you process credit cards. Shared hosting is disqualified.

You’ll also be able to change file permissions, using multiple user accounts to segment privileges. Under shared hosting, sometimes you have no way of granting web designers access to your website without giving them control over the whole thing. You’ll have greater administrative capabilities. You will be able to dial up or dial down user privileges as you see fit.

3. Flexibility/Control

Dedicated hosting gives you much more flexibility and control than shared hosting. You can manage the server configuration. Managing your website’s server configuration under shared hosting is impossible since changes you make would affect every other website hosted on the server.

You can even install a different operating system if you want. You can choose how much memory a single web task is permitted to use or install your own database server. You will have access to cron jobs. You can run tasks which consume as much or as little CPU as you please.

For some website owners, even in 2018, owning a fixed IP address is a big deal. Some shared hosting providers can permit you to use a dedicated IP address, but when a dedicated IP option is available under shared hosting, the costs are higher. Many hosting providers can’t even provide one with shared hosting. A dedicated IP address is critical if you want to engage in email marketing or use your own SSL certificate. You’ll be able to use your own IP to access your web server even if you are facing DNS issues. Also, some third-party applications require one.

4. Reliability

Dedicated hosting providers are usually more reliable than shared hosting because they do not share server resources. Foreign applications can’t bring down the server due to security holes or an excessive number of users. Dedicated hosting does not have the easy redundancy typically available with some of the newer forms of cloud hosting, but redundancy can be made available.

5. Performance

Performance on a dedicated server is excellent. You won’t require a hypervisor or any sort of resource limiter to keep your tasks from using all available resources. As a result, your software will make more efficient of the available hardware. You won’t have to share the memory cache

Since they won’t be required to share resources with other web pages, your web pages will be able to draw upon the unbridled power of your CPU, disks, and network hardware. You will be able to access hardware without virtualization. You’ll be able to optimize the system to meet the needs of your particular application.

The high-IO capabilities and mathematical performance of dedicated servers make them a good choice for SQL databases. They are also well-suited for CPU intensive tasks like video rendering or compression.

Tips

Some of the newer cloud configurations permit placing machines with many of the same capabilities as dedicated servers in the cloud.

Of course, while the modes of access to cloud computing resources continue to evolve, with current technology, a server which is not shared remains fundamentally more secure than one lacking exclusivity.

Some hosting providers have the capability to deliver bona fide dedicated resources using a cloud access model. These can allow you to take advantage of streamlined allocation models while retaining the benefits of a dedicated server.

While shared hosting is cheaper, a dedicated solution is superior.

If you plan to charge credit cards online or operate your own email marketing campaigns, it is a requirement.
